Roles of Political Parties Concerning Personal Data Protection in General Elections in Indonesia
Political campaigns by political parties in the digital era leverage large amounts of data to target and influence voters, raising concerns about data protection and privacy. Therefore, political parties must uphold data protection in their campaigns and remain within the bounds of maintaining electoral integrity and individual privacy.
Political parties must ensure that the collection, use, and sharing of personal data are based on clear and lawful grounds for processing the data subject’s personal information, in compliance with principles such as consent, legitimate interests, or other legal bases, as well as the provisions of personal data protection laws. This situation indicates that digital technology has the potential to threaten the foundations of democracy and human rights.
